Favorite Literary Characters

We will do this exercise in class in groups, but if you are exploring this web site on your own, feel free to consider the following set of questions:

  1. Who is your favorite character from any book you have read?
  2. Favorite characters tend to be drawn in such detail by thier authors that you the reader can tell their life story.  In a paragraph or two, tell us what you remember about the life of your favorite character.
  3. While all readers have their own mental picture of characters from stories, authors often provide vivid description that aids in forming our mental picture.  In a paragraph, describe what your favorite character looks like.
  4. Memorable characters are generally not totally good, but instead have their weaknesses.  What are the most important flaws in your favorite character?  Does your character change for the better during the story as far as these flaws are concerned?
  5. Are there other books, movies, TV shows, with characters that remind you of your favorite character?

We will create our list of favorite characters as well as their mini biographies here:  I'll start...

Why this character?

 Huckleberry Finn

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

Huck's voice.  He tells his own story, in a voice that at one and the same time shows his lack of formal schooling and his practical intelligence and good sense.

 Harry Potter

The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

 Bella Swan

Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer

...in the beginning, she is a quiet girl who minds her own business.  At the end, she turns into a heroine and saves her loved ones.  I feel I can relate to her.  It's like she's giving you a message:  always face your fears and never think anything is impossible.
